Well folks, I've thought long and hard about this issue and I'm about the make a major announcement. I have changed my position and I am in complete agreement with Mr.Whitten on this! The Mexican Americans better start speaking English or they will suffer dearly. Why would I change my mind on this issue, when I defended their position before? Believe me; I actually had a hard time sleeping nights when thinking about this. After doing some historical research on the internet, I finally had an epiphany! ASKING THE MEXICAN AMERICANS TO SPEAK ENGLISH IS NOT RACISIM!!!! I REPEATE, ASKING THE MEXICAN AMERICANS TO SPEAK ENGLISH IS NOT RACISIM!!!! The reason I say this is, as Malone7 so wisely points out, the Mexicans are not ethnically Spanish, they are distantly related to the indigenous Aztecs and Mayans and other indigenous peoples. Why are these people so stubborn to GIVE UP THE LANGUAGE OF THEIR CONQUERQUERS, THE SPANIARDS? Spanish, like English is a language that originated in EUROPE of all places and no one today would confuse a White European Spaniard with a Mexican. The Spanish Conquistadores came from a Christian, European country and crossed an ocean to conquer a people they had NOTHING racially or culturally in common with. The Conquistadores did not come to establish colonies; they were looking for gold and loot to enrich the Spanish Crown. They came, they saw, they conquered and then THEY LEFT. Afterwards, there was not a mass migration by White European Spaniards to the U.S. like other European groups that came later. At the time, Spain was a wealthy and prosperous county and whose citizens had little reason to immigrate to the Americas. The few Spaniards that did were part of the elite class that ran the Mexican government. Mexico at the time included New Mexico, Texas, Arizona, Nevada and California. The local population was overwhelmingly indigenous Mexicans descended from the Aztecs and Mayan Indians. The Conquistadors obliterated their INDIGINOUS culture and imposed a Christian God and a European language upon them. Just like the White plantation owners in the Deep South who obliterated the culture of the African slaves. African Americans today speak English and have English sounding names. In the same way, the indigenous Mexicans speak Spanish and have Spanish names. What I'm saying here is not RACISIM by any means. I'm not calling anyone names. But when you consider the history of Mexican Americans, it's quite obvious. Their language is a vestige of their European conquerors, and it IS NOT part of their RACE! Therefore to demand that they speak English IS NOT RACISIM!!!
